On the waterBosphorus cruise: ferry, tour boat or a boat of your own

The same strait, three very different afternoons: a city ferry with tea on the deck, a shared tour boat with commentary, or a boat that leaves when you are ready. This is how to choose.

In short

  • A Bosphorus cruise comes in three forms: the city ferry's own tours, shared tour boats with commentary or dinner, and a private boat or yacht chartered for your party.
  • The long public Bosphorus tour takes about six hours, leaving Eminönü at 10:35 for Anadolu Kavağı near the Black Sea and returning at 16:40, as listed on 4 November 2026. Shared tour boats and private cruises usually take 1.5 to 3 hours.
  • Sunset is the most beautiful hour on the water, after 8 pm in high summer and before 6 pm in December, and a dinner cruise adds three hours or so at the table.
  • Most cruises board at Eminönü, Kabataş or Beşiktaş on the European side, while a private boat can collect you from a pier close to your hotel.

A Bosphorus cruise is the one thing nearly everyone does in Istanbul, and the one most people do in the least comfortable way. The strait runs about 30 km from the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea, between palaces, fortresses and wooden waterside mansions, and there are three ways to see it: the city ferry, a shared tour boat, or a boat of your own.

This guide compares them, with the current public ferry timetable, what a sunset or dinner cruise is really like, what you will see, where to board and when to go. If you already know you want a private yacht, our Bosphorus yacht charter guide goes into boats, sizes and licensing in detail.

What are the types of Bosphorus cruise?

The three types of Bosphorus cruise differ in time, privacy and comfort far more than in route: all of them pass the same palaces and bridges. The table below sets out the differences, with the public ferry times as listed by Şehir Hatları on 4 November 2026. Timetables change by season, and the official site decides.

How long is a Bosphorus cruise?

A Bosphorus cruise lasts anything from 90 minutes to six hours. Shared tour boats usually take 1.5 to 2.5 hours and turn near the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. A private boat is normally booked for two to four hours: two hours covers the lower Bosphorus, while three or four allow you to reach the Black Sea mouth and come back by sunset. The long public ferry tour is a full day out, about six hours with lunch in a fishing village at the top of the strait.

The public ferry: the long and short Bosphorus tours

The public Bosphorus ferry tour is run by Şehir Hatları every day of the year. The long tour leaves Eminönü at 10:35 and calls at Beşiktaş, Üsküdar, Kanlıca, Sarıyer and Rumeli Kavağı, reaching Anadolu Kavağı at 12:25. The ferry waits there until 15:00 and is back at Eminönü at 16:40. The short tour leaves Eminönü at 14:40, calls at Üsküdar and reaches Ortaköy half an hour later before heading back, so it covers only the lower Bosphorus.

Tickets are sold at the pier; foreign visitors pay a higher fare than residents, and the current fares are listed on the Şehir Hatları website. Sit on the left going north for the European shore, or move across the deck as you go. At Anadolu Kavağı, the break is long enough for a fish lunch and a steep walk up towards the ruins of Yoros Castle, with a view of the Black Sea entrance and the third bridge; parts of the hill have been under excavation, so access varies.

Is a Bosphorus sunset cruise worth it?

A Bosphorus sunset cruise is worth it, because the last hour of daylight is when the strait looks its best. The sun sets behind the European shore, so the palaces and mansions glow on the way up, and on the way back the bridges are lit and the minarets of the old city stand against the sky. In June and July the sun goes down after 8 pm; in December, before 6 pm.

Shared sunset cruises fill quickly in summer and the best places at the rail go early. On a private boat, the captain can time the turn so that you are passing Rumeli Hisarı or the Maiden's Tower at exactly the right moment, which is the point of our Bosphorus by evening journey.

What is a Bosphorus dinner cruise like?

A Bosphorus dinner cruise is usually a large shared boat with long tables, a set menu of meze, a main course and dessert, and an evening programme of music, folk dancing and belly dancing. Evenings typically last about three hours, often with hotel transfers included. It is lively and sociable rather than intimate, and on a crowded boat the show can matter more than the view.

For a quieter evening, a private dinner on board changes everything: a table on deck, a menu agreed in advance, music only if you want it, and the boat sized for two or for forty. Our Bosphorus evenings are arranged this way, with cars waiting at the quay at both ends.

What will you see on a Bosphorus cruise?

On a Bosphorus cruise you see Istanbul's history laid out along both shores, from the Ottoman palaces near the city to the fortresses and fishing villages further north.

  • Dolmabahçe Palace, the long white façade of the 19th-century sultans' palace on the European shore. Our Dolmabahçe Palace guide covers a visit inside.
  • Ortaköy, its mosque on the water's edge beneath the first bridge, the 15 July Martyrs Bridge.
  • Beylerbeyi Palace and Kuzguncuk on the Asian shore, the summer palace in white marble and the wooden houses beside it.
  • The yalıs, the wooden waterside mansions of Arnavutköy, Yeniköy, Kandilli and Kanlıca, some painted the deep red of old Ottoman houses.
  • Rumeli Hisarı, the fortress Mehmed II built in 1452 before the conquest of the city, facing the smaller Anadolu Hisarı across the narrowest part of the strait.
  • The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and, from the top of the strait, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge near the Black Sea.
  • The Maiden's Tower, on its islet off Üsküdar, as you return towards the old city.

Where do you board a Bosphorus cruise?

Most Bosphorus cruises board on the European side. The city ferry tours leave from Eminönü, beside the Galata Bridge and the Spice Bazaar, with stops at Beşiktaş and Üsküdar where you can also join. Shared tour boats leave mainly from Eminönü, Kabataş and Beşiktaş. Private boats board at piers along the shore, such as Kuruçeşme or Bebek, or close to a waterside hotel; the larger yachts may only take guests on at licensed facilities, so the boarding point depends on the boat.

Eminönü is busy and the traffic around it slow, so leave plenty of time. A driver who drops you at the pier and meets you at a different one when you come back saves the walk.

When is the best time for a Bosphorus cruise?

The best time for a Bosphorus cruise is from May to October, in the two hours before sunset. Spring and autumn give soft light and comfortable decks; July and August are warm on the water even in the evening, which is when most people want to be out. Winter cruises are perfectly possible and the ferries run all year, but the wind off the Black Sea is cold, so go around midday on a clear day and choose a boat with a heated saloon.

Mornings are the quietest time on the water and the best for photographs of the Asian shore, which is lit from the east. Avoid long cruises on very windy days, when the strait gets choppy. The Bosphorus is also an international shipping lane, so you will share it with tankers and container ships, an impressive sight in its own right.

When is a private Bosphorus cruise worth it?

A private Bosphorus cruise is worth it for families with children or grandparents, for couples and celebrations, and for anyone with limited time who wants the strait at the right hour without queues. You choose when to leave, where to board and how far to go, and the boat waits if someone needs a rest. A motor yacht can make it a whole day, from the Golden Horn to the Black Sea, and our yachts page sets out the other options.

From Istanbul, the water leads further too: a private boat can carry on across the Sea of Marmara to the islands, as our Princes' Islands guide explains, and the Asian side of Istanbul is the natural place to step ashore for lunch.

Questions

How long is a Bosphorus cruise?

A Bosphorus cruise lasts from about 90 minutes to six hours, depending on the type. Shared tour boats usually take 1.5 to 2.5 hours, turning near the second bridge. The city ferry's long Bosphorus tour takes about six hours return, including a break of roughly two and a half hours at Anadolu Kavağı. A private boat is usually booked for two to four hours.

Is a Bosphorus cruise worth it?

A Bosphorus cruise is worth it for almost every first visit to Istanbul, because the palaces, fortresses and waterside mansions are best seen from the water and the city makes sense once you have travelled between its two continents. The public ferry is the simplest choice, a sunset cruise the most beautiful, and a private boat the most comfortable for families and celebrations.

What is the best time for a Bosphorus cruise?

The best time for a Bosphorus cruise is the last two hours before sunset, when the light falls on the European shore and the bridges are lit as you turn back. In season, May to October, the water is calm and the decks are pleasant. In winter, go around midday in good weather and choose a boat with a closed, heated saloon.

Is it cold on a Bosphorus cruise?

A Bosphorus cruise is often colder than the weather on land, because the wind blows straight down the strait from the Black Sea. Bring a jacket even on summer evenings. From November to March, wear a warm, windproof coat, a scarf and gloves, and choose a boat with an enclosed saloon so you can step inside between views.

What is a Bosphorus dinner cruise like?

A Bosphorus dinner cruise is usually a shared boat with a set menu, served while the boat sails past the lit palaces and bridges, often with music and a floor show of folk and belly dancing. Evenings typically last about three hours. For a quieter table, a private dinner on a chartered boat is the alternative, with the menu, music and route agreed in advance.

Where do Bosphorus cruises leave from?

Most Bosphorus cruises leave from the European side: the city ferry's tours from Eminönü, with calls at Beşiktaş and Üsküdar, and many shared tour boats from Eminönü, Kabataş and Beşiktaş. Private boats can board at piers along the shore, such as Kuruçeşme or Bebek, or close to a waterside hotel, depending on the boat's size and licence.

Can you do a Bosphorus cruise on a public ferry?

Yes. Şehir Hatları, the city ferry company, runs a long Bosphorus tour from Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı every day, departing at 10:35 and returning to Eminönü at 16:40, and a short tour from Eminönü at 14:40, as listed on 4 November 2026. Ordinary commuter ferries, such as Eminönü to Üsküdar, also give a short and inexpensive taste of the strait.

Do I need to book a Bosphorus cruise in advance?

The public Bosphorus ferry tours do not need advance booking; tickets are sold at the pier, though queues build in summer. Sunset and dinner cruises are best booked a few days ahead in season. A private boat for a summer weekend, a public holiday or New Year's Eve should be reserved several weeks in advance.
