Hot air balloons over the valleys of Cappadocia at first light

Across TürkiyeA Turkey itinerary for 10 days, privately

Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast is the classic route for a reason. The art is in the pacing, and in knowing what to leave out.

In short

  • The classic Turkey itinerary for 10 days is Istanbul (4 nights), Cappadocia (2–3 nights) and the coast (3–4 nights): either the Aegean, with Ephesus and Bodrum, or the Lycian coast around Antalya and Kaş.
  • Domestic flights do the long distances: Istanbul to Cappadocia (Nevşehir or Kayseri) takes about 1 hour 20–30 minutes; Istanbul to Izmir, Bodrum, Dalaman or Antalya, roughly an hour to an hour and a half.
  • With 7 days, choose two places, not three. With 14 days, add a yacht in the bays, Pamukkale or a few slow days on the coast.
  • The best seasons for the full route are late April to June and September to October. In July and August, keep the coast and see the ancient sites early in the morning.

If you have ten days, spend four in Istanbul, two or three in Cappadocia and three or four on the coast. That is the classic Turkey itinerary for 10 days at an easy pace. It works because each part is different: a great city, a strange and beautiful landscape, and the sea. Below are the 10-day plan, shorter and longer versions, and the choices that make the difference.

Türkiye is larger than most visitors expect. Istanbul to Cappadocia is around 700 km by road, and Cappadocia to the Aegean is further still. The secret of a good private tour of Turkey is to fly the long distances, keep a car and driver at each end, and never change hotels more than three times in ten days.

The classic Turkey itinerary for 10 days

This is the route we suggest for a first visit, in spring or autumn. It moves at a comfortable pace, with no early starts except the balloon morning.

DaysWhereHighlights
1–4Istanbul (4 nights)Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Cistern; the Grand Bazaar; an evening boat on the Bosphorus; the Asian shore
5–7Cappadocia (2–3 nights)A balloon at dawn, the valleys on foot, an underground city, a cave suite
8–10The Aegean (3 nights)Ephesus early in the morning, the House of the Virgin Mary, slow days on the coast near Bodrum or Çeşme

Fly home from Izmir or Bodrum, or return to Istanbul for a last night. A late flight home is easiest from Istanbul, where most long-haul routes start.

Days 1–4: Istanbul

Give Istanbul four nights if you can. Spend the first full day on the Historic Peninsula with a private guide, starting at opening time. Keep one evening for the Bosphorus by boat, and one day for the Asian side or the Princes' Islands. Our Istanbul itinerary for 3 to 5 days sets out the city part in detail.

Days 5–7: Cappadocia

A morning flight from Istanbul takes about an hour and a half to Nevşehir Kapadokya or Kayseri airport. Göreme is about 40 minutes by car from Nevşehir, and about an hour from Kayseri. Stay in a cave hotel. Plan the balloon for your first morning, so a second morning is free if the weather cancels the flight. Our guide to private balloon flights in Cappadocia explains why that matters.

Days 8–10: Ephesus and the Aegean coast

Fly to Izmir, directly in some seasons or via Istanbul. Selçuk and Ephesus are about an hour's drive from Izmir airport. See Ephesus at opening time, before the heat and the cruise groups. Then drive on to the coast. Bodrum is about two and a half to three hours from Ephesus. Çeşme and Alaçatı are closer to Izmir.

The marble street and ancient facades of Ephesus
Ephesus at opening time, before the heat and the crowds.

The alternative: Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Lycian coast

For travellers who want clear water more than ancient cities, swap the Aegean for the Lycian coast. Fly from Cappadocia or Istanbul to Antalya. Spend a day in Kaleiçi, the old town, then drive about three hours west to Kaş. Take a private boat over the sunken city at Kekova, and walk among the pines at Olympos. The scenery is the most dramatic on the Turkish coast. Our Antalya and Lycian coast journey shows how we plan it.

A Turkey itinerary for 7 days

With a week, choose two places and give each enough time. These are the three versions that work best; our 7-day Turkey itinerary sets one out day by day.

VersionPlanBest for
City and landscapeIstanbul 4 nights, Cappadocia 3 nightsFirst visits, spring and autumn
City and seaIstanbul 3 nights, Bodrum or the Lycian coast 4 nightsSummer, families, honeymoons
History in depthIstanbul 4 nights, Ephesus and the Aegean 3 nightsTravellers who love ancient sites

Trying to fit Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast into seven days is possible, but it means a hotel change every two nights. Most of our clients prefer to leave one out and come back.

A Turkey itinerary for 14 days

Two weeks lets you add the slow parts that make a trip memorable. A typical 14-day plan:

  1. Istanbul, 4 nights: the city at an easy pace, with a day on the Asian shore.
  2. Cappadocia, 3 nights: a balloon, the valleys, and one unscheduled day.
  3. Pamukkale, 1 night: the white travertine terraces at sunset and Hierapolis in the morning, about three hours from Ephesus by road.
  4. Ephesus and the Aegean, 2 nights: the ancient city and the countryside around Şirince.
  5. A yacht or a villa, 4 nights: a gulet or motor yacht from Bodrum or Göcek, or a villa above the sea.

Four days at sea is the best way we know to end a long trip. See our guide to gulet charters in Turkey.

Flight times between the main stops

Domestic flights in Türkiye are frequent and short. These are typical flight times; schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.

RouteTypical flight timeThen by car
Istanbul to Nevşehir or Kayseri (Cappadocia)About 1 h 20 – 1 h 3040–60 min to Göreme
Istanbul to Izmir (Ephesus, Çeşme)About 1 h – 1 h 15About 1 h to Selçuk
Istanbul to Milas-BodrumAbout 1 h – 1 h 1530–60 min to the peninsula
Istanbul to Dalaman (Göcek, Fethiye)About 1 h 15 – 1 h 30About 30 min to Göcek
Istanbul to AntalyaAbout 1 h 15 – 1 h 30About 3 h to Kaş

For families or larger groups, a private jet between the stops can turn a travel day into a morning. Our guide to private jets and helicopters in Türkiye explains how it works.

When to go

Late April to June and September to October suit the whole route: Istanbul is mild, Cappadocia's mornings are clear, and the sea is warm enough from late May. In July and August the coast is at its best but the ancient sites are hot. Visit Ephesus and Pamukkale at opening time, and keep the afternoons for the water. In winter, Istanbul and Cappadocia are quiet and beautiful, sometimes under snow, but the coast is out of season. Our month-by-month guide to Istanbul covers the city in more detail.

Three ways to shape the same ten days

For families with children

Keep Istanbul to three nights and add a fourth on the coast. Choose a hotel with a pool in Istanbul and a villa or a beach hotel at the end. In Cappadocia, balloon companies set minimum ages and heights for children, so check before you plan around the flight. Horse riding in the valleys and the underground cities are good alternatives. Our families page and our guide to Istanbul with kids have more ideas.

For a honeymoon

Istanbul for three nights, a cave suite in Cappadocia for two, and five nights on the coast: a villa above the sea near Bodrum, or a private yacht in the bays of Göcek. Keep the evenings free of plans. A private dinner on a terrace in Cappadocia, or on deck at anchor, is worth more than any tour.

For travellers who love history

Add a day to Istanbul for the Byzantine land walls and the old quarters of Fener and Balat. Swap the beach for Pamukkale, Hierapolis and Aphrodisias. Or fly east to Mardin and Göbeklitepe, the oldest monumental site yet found. Our Mardin and Göbeklitepe journey fits into a ten-day trip as a three-day extension.

How to pace a private tour of Turkey

  • Three bases at most in ten days. Every hotel change costs half a day.
  • One big thing a day. A morning at Ephesus, then the afternoon by the pool, not a second site.
  • Start early at the famous sites. The first hour is the best hour, in every season.
  • Leave a free day in Cappadocia. Balloon flights depend on the wind.
  • End somewhere you can rest. A villa or a boat is a better last memory than an airport hotel.

If you would like us to shape a route around your dates, tell us who is travelling and what matters most to you. We will send two or three options, with flights, hotels and guides, and change them until they fit.

Questions

Is 10 days enough for Turkey?

Ten days is enough for Istanbul, Cappadocia and one stretch of coast, at a comfortable pace. It is not enough for the whole country. The best trips accept that and save the Black Sea, the south-east or a second coast for another visit.

What is the best way to travel between Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast?

By domestic flight for the long distances, with a private car and driver at each end. Driving from Istanbul to Cappadocia takes most of a day, and Cappadocia to the Aegean even longer, so flying saves whole days of the trip.

Can you fly directly from Cappadocia to the Aegean coast?

Sometimes. In some seasons there are a few direct flights a week between Kayseri and Izmir. Otherwise you connect through Istanbul, which still takes less time than the drive. We check the schedule for your dates before fixing the order of the trip.

Should I start in Istanbul or end there?

Either works. Starting in Istanbul gives you time to recover from the long flight in a city with plenty to do at any hour. Ending there puts the shopping, a last dinner on the Bosphorus and the international flight home in the same place.

Is a private tour of Turkey suitable for families with children?

Yes, and it is often the easiest way to travel with them. A private guide adjusts the pace, the driver keeps the car ready, and the days can include a pool afternoon or a boat instead of a third museum.

Is 7 days enough for Turkey?

Seven days is enough for Turkey if you choose two places rather than three. The versions that work best are Istanbul for four nights with Cappadocia for three, Istanbul for three nights with Bodrum or the Lycian coast for four, or Istanbul with Ephesus and the Aegean. Fitting Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast into one week is possible, but it means a hotel change every two nights, so most travellers leave one out and come back for it.

How many days do you need in Cappadocia?

Two or three nights in Cappadocia is right for most trips. Balloon flights depend on the wind and are sometimes cancelled at dawn, so book the flight for your first morning and keep a second morning free as a back-up. The rest of the time goes to walking the valleys, an underground city and an evening in a cave suite. Göreme is about 40 minutes by car from Nevşehir airport and about an hour from Kayseri. Our guide to Cappadocia from Istanbul covers the journey.

Is Turkey worth visiting in winter?

Yes, Turkey is worth visiting in winter if you build the trip around Istanbul and Cappadocia rather than the beach. Both are quiet and beautiful from December to March, and Cappadocia is sometimes under snow. The Aegean and Lycian coasts are out of season, so swap the sea for museums, a historic hammam and, from late December to March, a few days of skiing at Uludağ, Erciyes or Palandöken. Our guide to skiing in Turkey has the details.
