In short

  • The first Vienna Christmas markets of 2026 opened on 6 November, at Schönbrunn Palace and Stephansplatz. The main market at Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026.
  • Most markets close on 23 or 26 December; Schönbrunn and the Prater winter market stay open until 6 January 2027, and the Belvedere market until 31 December.
  • Punsch and Glühwein contain alcohol, but Kinderpunsch does not. Drinks come in a mug with a deposit, refunded when you return it, or keep the mug as a souvenir.
  • Vienna in December is cold, with average highs around 5°C in the city centre. UAE citizens need no visa for Austria; Saudi, Qatari, Kuwaiti, Bahraini and Omani citizens still need a Schengen visa.

The Vienna Christmas markets turn the city's squares into villages of wooden huts for six weeks of the year: in front of the Gothic City Hall, in the courtyard of Schönbrunn Palace, below the Belvedere and along the narrow lanes of Spittelberg. Every Vienna Christmas market has its own character, from the grand to the crafty, and the smell of roasted chestnuts and hot punch carries across all of them in the cold evening air.

This guide gives the 2026 dates and opening hours, how the markets fit together on a map, what to eat and drink, the mug deposit, the weather, Advent concerts, combining Vienna with Salzburg, visas for Gulf travellers and the quietest hours to go. Dates and hours are as published by the Vienna Tourist Board and the markets themselves, as checked on 4 November 2026.

Which is the best Christmas market in Vienna?

The best Christmas market in Vienna is the one that suits your evening, and they are close enough to see several in a day.

Rathausplatz: the largest

The Wiener Christkindlmarkt fills the square in front of City Hall, with trees hung with lights, a carousel and an ice rink that stays open until 6 January. It is the most festive and the most crowded; go on a weekday afternoon.

Schönbrunn Palace: the most elegant

The market at Schönbrunn stands in the palace's great forecourt, with a tall tree in front of the yellow façade. It is spacious, good for children and open into the New Year, which makes it the natural choice for families.

Belvedere, Spittelberg, Am Hof, Freyung and Karlsplatz

The Belvedere market, now presented as the K&K Christmas Market, sits before the Upper Belvedere's baroque front and runs until 31 December. Spittelberg spreads through a quarter of narrow Biedermeier lanes and is the place for crafts and gifts. Am Hof and Freyung, a few minutes apart in the old centre, are smaller and traditional, and Art Advent at Karlsplatz, in front of the Karlskirche, is devoted to handmade work.

A Vienna Christmas market map: how the markets fit together

A Vienna Christmas market map makes the plan obvious: most markets lie in or just around the old city, inside or along the Ring. A good evening walk links Rathausplatz, Freyung and Am Hof, all within a short stroll of each other, then continues to Stephansplatz by the cathedral. Spittelberg lies just behind the MuseumsQuartier, Maria-Theresien-Platz between the two great museums, and Karlsplatz and the Belvedere to the south. Schönbrunn is further west, a short ride on the U4 underground line or by car.

With a driver we arrange in Vienna, the distances stop mattering: the car drops you at one market and waits at the next, which helps with children and older travellers on cold nights.

What to eat and drink: Punsch, Glühwein and Kinderpunsch

Glühwein, hot mulled wine, and Punsch, a hot spiced drink usually made with wine, rum or fruit spirits, are the classic drinks at a Vienna Christmas market, and both contain alcohol. Kinderpunsch is the non-alcoholic version, a hot fruit punch sold at every major market; Muslim visitors and anyone avoiding alcohol should ask for it by name. Hot chocolate and fruit teas are also easy to find.

To eat, look for roasted chestnuts (Maroni), baked potatoes, potato pancakes, Langos (fried flatbread), Kaiserschmarrn (torn sweet pancake with fruit compote), gingerbread and roasted almonds. Many savoury stalls sell pork sausages and ham, so halal travellers should ask before ordering and keep to sweets, chestnuts, potatoes and cheese dishes, or plan a halal dinner afterwards. We book halal restaurants in advance, as our guide to halal-friendly travel describes.

How does the mug deposit work?

The mug deposit at Vienna Christmas markets is simple: hot drinks come in a ceramic or glass mug, and a small deposit (Pfand) is added to the price. Return the mug to any drinks stall at the same market and the deposit is refunded, usually in cash. Or keep it: each market has its own design, changing every year, and many visitors take one home. Carry some coins, as small stalls may prefer cash.

What is the weather in Vienna in December?

Vienna in December is cold, with average daytime highs of about 5°C and lows around 1°C in the city centre, according to the 1991–2020 records of Austria's national weather service. Expect grey skies, short days and rain or sleet on some evenings; snow is possible but never guaranteed. Dress in layers, with a warm coat, gloves, a hat and waterproof shoes, because an evening at the markets is spent standing outdoors.

Advent concerts and Vienna beyond the markets

Advent is concert season in Vienna. Churches and concert halls hold Advent and Christmas concerts through December, and the Vienna Boys' Choir sings Sunday Mass at the Hofburg Chapel from mid-September to the end of June, including Advent Sundays. Good seats sell out, so we book them with the trip. By day, Schönbrunn, the Belvedere and the Hofburg are quieter in winter than in summer, and an afternoon in a coffee house is a Viennese custom of its own.

Vienna and Salzburg Christmas markets in one trip

The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt, on Domplatz and Residenzplatz below the fortress, runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, according to its official website. The fastest trains from Vienna to Salzburg take about two and a half hours, and a car is similar. A week can hold four nights in Vienna and two or three in Salzburg, and our Vienna, Salzburg and Zell am See journey is easily reshaped for Advent. In summer the same route continues to the lake; see our Zell am See guide.

Do Gulf travellers need a visa for Austria?

UAE citizens do not need a visa for Austria and may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Saudi, Qatari, Kuwaiti, Bahraini and Omani citizens still need a Schengen visa, as checked on 4 November 2026; in October 2026 the EU Council welcomed the start of visa-waiver procedures for these countries, but the rule stands until EU law changes. Turkish citizens also need a Schengen visa. Non-EU travellers now register fingerprints and a photograph at the Schengen border under the Entry/Exit System, while ETIAS, the planned travel authorisation, is not yet in operation.

We do not issue visas, but we check the official requirement for every passport in the party and leave time for appointments. Direct flights from Istanbul to Vienna take about two hours and twenty minutes; our flight tickets team books them, or a private jet flies on your own schedule.

When are the Vienna Christmas markets least crowded?

The Vienna Christmas markets are least crowded on weekday afternoons, from opening until about four, before the after-work crowd arrives. Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest, as is 8 December, a public holiday in Austria. The first week of a market and the days just before it closes are also busy. For the lights without the crush, go at dusk on a Monday or Tuesday.

For families, our families service plans connecting rooms, early dinners and a pace for children. If you would rather spend part of the season at home in Istanbul, see our guides to Istanbul in December and New Year's Eve in Istanbul.
