In short
- A wedding in Istanbul can be held in historic palaces and pavilions, waterside mansions, hotel ballrooms, garden terraces or on a private boat on the Bosphorus.
- In Türkiye, only a civil ceremony at a municipal marriage office creates a legal marriage. A religious ceremony alone has no legal effect.
- Foreign couples typically need a certificate of no impediment, birth certificates and passports, with apostilles and notarised Turkish translations. Documents are often valid for six months.
- The most popular months are May, June and September. Plan nine to twelve months ahead for a Bosphorus venue on a summer weekend.
- Many couples marry legally at home or at a municipal office, then hold a symbolic ceremony by the water with their guests.
A wedding in Istanbul brings together everything the city does well: palaces on the water, light over the Bosphorus at dusk, generous hospitality and food for every tradition. Couples come from the Gulf, Europe and beyond to marry here. A wedding takes two kinds of planning: the legal steps, and the celebration itself.
We plan weddings in Istanbul and across Türkiye, from small dinners on a terrace to large receptions with guests flying in from several countries. This guide covers the types of venue, how marriage works legally for foreigners, the right season, guest travel and a planning timeline.
Wedding venues in Istanbul: the main types
Istanbul's wedding venues fall into a few clear types. The right one depends on your guest list, your traditions and the feeling you want.
| Venue type | Guests | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Historic palaces and pavilions | Medium to large | Ottoman façades and gardens on the water; the most formal setting |
| Waterside mansions (yalı) | Small to medium | Private, intimate, with a terrace on the Bosphorus |
| Hotel ballrooms and gardens | Medium to very large | Practical for big guest lists; rooms, kitchens and staff in one place |
| Terraces and rooftops | Small to medium | Skyline and sunset views; best from May to October |
| A private boat on the Bosphorus | Small | A ceremony or dinner on the water; the most personal option |
A Bosphorus wedding is the classic choice. A ceremony on a waterside lawn at sunset, with dinner as the lights come on across the strait, is hard to better. For smaller celebrations, a yacht works beautifully. See our guide to Bosphorus yacht charters.

Getting married in Türkiye as a foreigner: the legal steps
In Türkiye, a marriage is legally valid only when it is performed by a civil registrar. Each district municipality runs a marriage office, the evlendirme dairesi. A religious ceremony on its own has no legal effect. It can follow or accompany the civil marriage, but cannot replace it.
The documents for foreign nationals vary by country and by municipality, but they typically include:
- A certificate of no impediment, confirming that each of you is free to marry. It is issued by your home country or its consulate.
- A birth certificate for each of you.
- A valid passport, with a notarised Turkish translation of the photo page.
- Proof of divorce or a death certificate, if either of you was married before.
- Passport photographs, usually several of each of you.
- A health report, usually issued in Türkiye shortly before the ceremony.
Foreign documents generally need an apostille, or legalisation by a Turkish consulate if your country is not part of the Apostille Convention. They then need a notarised Turkish translation. Many municipalities accept documents only within six months of their issue date. If the bride or groom does not speak Turkish, a sworn interpreter must attend the ceremony, and two adult witnesses are required.
After the ceremony, you receive a Turkish marriage certificate. Many couples also request a multilingual extract of the marriage record for use abroad. Ask your embassy how to register the marriage at home.
Civil, religious or symbolic ceremony?
Couples usually choose one of three paths:
- A civil marriage in Istanbul, often with a small group, followed by the celebration the same day or the next.
- A civil marriage at home, then a symbolic ceremony in Istanbul with no paperwork in Türkiye. This is the simplest option for many foreign couples.
- A religious ceremony, such as a nikah, held at the venue alongside a civil marriage in Türkiye or at home.
A symbolic ceremony has the same flowers, music and vows, and can be held anywhere: a palace lawn, a terrace or the deck of a boat.
When is the best time for a wedding in Istanbul?
May, June and September are the most popular months. The evenings are warm enough to dine outdoors, and the light is soft. July and August are hot and busy but work well for evening receptions by the water. October is mild and golden. Winter weddings move indoors, to ballrooms and candlelit dining rooms, and venues are easier to secure.
Check the calendar before you fix a date. Religious holidays and large events fill hotels across the city. In 2027, these include Eid al-Fitr in March, Eid al-Adha in mid-May and the Turkish Grand Prix on 1–3 October. Our guide to the best time to visit Istanbul lists them in full.
Planning a destination wedding in Turkey: your guests
A destination wedding is as much about your guests as about the day. The details that make guests feel looked after are the ones they remember.
- Hotel blocks: rooms held at one or two hotels near the venue, released in good time if not needed.
- Arrivals: guests met at the airport and driven to their hotels. Istanbul Airport is a long drive from the city, so this matters. See our chauffeur and transfer service.
- Visas: clear, early information for each nationality, and invitation letters where needed.
- A welcome pack: a schedule, a map, dress codes and one contact for every question.
- Days around the wedding: a Bosphorus cruise, a private tour of the old city or a family dinner the night before.
Weddings for Gulf and Arab families
Istanbul is a natural setting for Gulf and Arab weddings. Halal catering is standard. Venues are used to receptions with separate halls or areas for men and women, and to planning around prayer times. A zaffa procession with drummers and singers, a henna evening the night before and late-night dinners for large families can all be arranged. Female staff, photographers and security can be provided for the women's celebration where requested.
For larger families, we also arrange interpreters, assistants and close protection, provided by licensed security companies.
Wedding dresses and attire in Istanbul
Istanbul is one of the region's great places to buy wedding dresses, evening gowns and tailoring. Many couples combine planning visits with fittings. We arrange private appointments with bridal ateliers and tailors, keep the fitting schedule, and make sure the dress, the suit and the outfits for the family are ready on time. What a wedding planner in Istanbul does for you
A good wedding planner in Istanbul turns many suppliers into one plan and one point of contact. That means the venue, the paperwork, the hotel rooms, the cars, the flowers, the menus and the people on the day. It also means someone on site who solves problems before you notice them.
We work from a single brief and a clear quote, approved by you before anything is booked. Then we run the day, from the first guest arrival to the last car home. Read more on our weddings page.
