In short
- The best time to visit Turkey is from mid-April to early June and from September to October, when Istanbul, the coast and Cappadocia are all comfortable at once.
- July and August suit the coast and the sea, with highs around 35°C in Antalya and Bodrum, but they are too hot for long days of sightseeing inland.
- Cappadocia's balloons fly all year when the weather allows, with the calmest mornings in spring and autumn and the most cancellations in winter.
- In 2027, plan around the two Eid holidays (9–11 March and 16–19 May) and the European and Gulf summer holidays, when hotels and flights fill first.
The best time to visit Turkey, for most journeys, is from mid-April to early June or from September to October. In those weeks Istanbul is mild, the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are warm without being fierce, and Cappadocia's mornings are calm enough for the balloons. Outside them, the answer depends on what you have come for: the sea in summer, the snow in winter, or quiet museums in between.
We plan journeys across Türkiye in every season. This guide compares the three places most first trips are built around, month by month, then sets out the 2027 dates that move crowds more than the weather does.
When is the best time to visit Turkey?
The best time to visit Turkey for a trip that combines Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast is May, followed closely by late September and early October. Days are long, rain is rare, and none of the three places is too hot or too cold. If you only want the beach, go from June to September. If you only want Istanbul, any month works, and our guide to the best time to visit Istanbul goes into the city in detail.
- For a first trip: late April to early June, or September to mid-October.
- For the sea: June to September, with September the warmest water and the softest heat.
- For balloons: April to June and September to October, when mornings are calmest.
- For snow and skiing: late December to March, in the ski resorts or Cappadocia under snow.
- For quiet and lower hotel rates: November and January to March, outside the holidays.
Turkey weather by month: Istanbul, the coast and Cappadocia
Turkey's weather depends on where you stand. Istanbul sits between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara and stays humid and moderate. The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts have long, hot, dry summers. Cappadocia is on the Anatolian plateau at over 1,000 metres, so its summers are warm and dry and its winters cold and snowy. The figures below are average daily highs, rounded: Istanbul as in our Istanbul guide, Antalya for the coast and Nevşehir for Cappadocia, from the 1991–2020 normals of the Turkish State Meteorological Service. Bodrum on the Aegean is within a degree of Antalya in most months.
| Month | Istanbul | Aegean & Med coast | Cappadocia | In short |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 9°C | 15°C | 4°C | Snow in Cappadocia, skiing, quiet cities |
| February | 9°C | 16°C | 6°C | Ski season; Ramadan begins in 2027 |
| March | 12°C | 18°C | 11°C | Changeable; Eid al-Fitr 9–11 March 2027 |
| April | 16°C | 22°C | 16°C | Tulips in Istanbul, green valleys, cool sea |
| May | 21°C | 26°C | 21°C | The best all-round month |
| June | 26°C | 32°C | 26°C | Sea warm enough to swim, long evenings |
| July | 28°C | 35°C | 29°C | Peak heat and peak season on the coast |
| August | 29°C | 35°C | 29°C | Warmest sea; busiest weeks of the year |
| September | 25°C | 32°C | 25°C | Warm sea, softer heat, fewer families |
| October | 20°C | 27°C | 19°C | Golden light; Grand Prix weekend in Istanbul |
| November | 15°C | 22°C | 12°C | Quiet, wetter; coast winding down |
| December | 11°C | 17°C | 6°C | Festive Istanbul, first snow inland |
Is spring a good time to visit Turkey?
Spring is one of the two best times to visit Turkey, and May is the single most rewarding month. In April Istanbul's parks fill with tulips, the Judas trees colour the Bosphorus hills and Cappadocia's valleys turn green. Highs reach about 16°C in Istanbul and Cappadocia and about 22°C on the Mediterranean coast. The sea is still cool in April, around 18°C, so it is a month for walking, ruins and long lunches rather than swimming.
By May every region works. Istanbul and Cappadocia are both around 21°C, the coast is in the mid-20s and the sea reaches about 21°C. Hotels with a view and private balloon baskets sell out early for May weekends, so book two to three months ahead.

Is Turkey too hot in summer?
Turkey is hot in July and August, but how hot depends on where you are. The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts average highs of about 35°C, and inland cities can be hotter. Istanbul is around 28–29°C with high humidity, and Cappadocia is around 29°C, dry, with cool mornings. Summer is the season for the sea.
Summer is also the busiest time of year. European school holidays run through July and August, and the long Gulf summer holidays overlap with them, so coastal hotels, Bosphorus restaurants and yachts book up months ahead. For sightseeing in summer, start early, rest through the afternoon heat and keep the evenings for the water. Our guide to the best beaches in Turkey covers where to go.
Is October a good time to visit Turkey?
October is one of the best months to visit Turkey, and September is better still for the sea. In September the coast is still in the low 30s, the water is at its warmest and the summer crowds thin once European schools return. October brings highs of about 27°C on the coast, 20°C in Istanbul and 19°C in Cappadocia, golden light for photography and very good balloon conditions.
Towards the end of October rain becomes more frequent, the nights in Cappadocia turn cold and coastal towns begin to close for the winter. In 2027 the Turkish Grand Prix runs at Istanbul Park on 1–3 October, so book Istanbul hotels well ahead for that weekend. November is quiet and mild on the Mediterranean coast, around 22°C, and wetter elsewhere.
Is Turkey worth visiting in winter?
Turkey is worth visiting in winter for cities, snow and skiing, though not for beaches. From December to February Istanbul averages highs of 9–11°C, grey and damp more often than cold. Cappadocia averages 4–6°C, with snow on the fairy chimneys on some mornings and cave hotels at their most atmospheric. The Mediterranean coast stays mild, around 15–17°C, but many seasonal hotels and beach businesses close until spring.
Winter is also the cheapest and quietest time to travel, outside Christmas, New Year and the Eid holidays. Museums have short queues and the best rooms are easier to book. The ski season usually runs from late December to March, with the most reliable snow in January and February at Uludağ, Erciyes and Palandöken. Our guide to skiing in Turkey compares the resorts.
When is the best time for a hot air balloon in Cappadocia?
The best time for a hot air balloon in Cappadocia is from April to June and from September to October, when mornings are usually calm and mild. Balloons fly in every month of the year, but only when Türkiye's civil aviation authority judges the morning's wind and visibility safe. Winter brings the most cancelled mornings, and also the most memorable flights: balloons over a valley under fresh snow.
In summer flights leave earliest, with hotel pick-ups often before 5 am. Whatever the season, stay at least two nights, ideally three, and book the balloon for the first morning so a cancellation can move to the next day. Our guide to a private balloon in Cappadocia explains how the morning works.
When is the sea warm enough to swim in Turkey?
The sea in Turkey is warm enough for most swimmers from June to October. Long-term averages for the Antalya coast give a sea of about 21°C in May, around 25°C in June, 27–29°C from July to September and about 25°C in October. The Aegean around Bodrum is usually a degree or two cooler in spring and autumn. For the best balance of warm water and bearable heat, choose June or September; for a late season, early October around Antalya.
Ramadan, Eid and other dates that matter in 2027
Holidays move hotel prices and crowds in Turkey as much as the weather does. Religious holidays follow the lunar calendar and move about eleven days earlier each year. The dates below are those published for 2027; Ramadan itself depends on the moon sighting and can shift by a day.
| Dates (2027) | What | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| About 8 Feb – 8 Mar | Ramadan | Calm days, lively evenings; iftar tables book early |
| 8 Mar (half day), 9–11 Mar | Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr) | Public holiday; domestic flights and hotels fill |
| 23 Apr, 1 May | National Sovereignty and Children's Day; Labour Day | Public holidays; busy spring weekends |
| 15 May (half day), 16–19 May | Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha) | The longest holiday of the spring; roads and resorts busy |
| July – August | European and Gulf summer holidays | Peak season on the coast and in Istanbul |
| 1–3 Oct | Turkish Grand Prix, Istanbul Park | Istanbul's busiest weekend for hotels and cars |
| 24 Dec – 1 Jan | Christmas and New Year | Istanbul and Cappadocia busy; book early |
During Ramadan, museums, shops and restaurants stay open, and the evenings around iftar are among the most atmospheric of the year. The national holidays on 19 May, 15 July, 30 August and 29 October close government offices, but most sights stay open.
The best time to visit Turkey and Greece together
The best time to visit Turkey and Greece together is May to June or September to early October. The two countries share the same eastern Mediterranean pattern, so the same weeks give a warm sea, long evenings and manageable heat on both sides of the Aegean. In winter, island ferries and seasonal hotels in Greece slow down much as they do on the Turkish coast. For a longer plan inside Türkiye, our 10-day Turkey itinerary shows how the regions fit together in one trip.
Once you know the month, the rest is order and timing: which region first, which room in which season, and how many balloon mornings to allow. Our private journeys across Türkiye, from Cappadocia at first light to the coast, are planned around exactly those questions, and the destinations page shows when each place is at its best.
