OccasionsA honeymoon in Turkey: routes, places and when to go

An evening on the Bosphorus, a balloon over Cappadocia at sunrise, then a villa above the Aegean with nobody else around. Türkiye fits a whole honeymoon into one country.

In short

  • A honeymoon in Turkey usually combines three things: a few days in Istanbul, two or three mornings in Cappadocia, and a week by the sea on the Aegean or the Lycian coast.
  • Ten to twelve days is the right length for three places. With a week, choose two: Istanbul and the coast, or Cappadocia and the coast.
  • The best time for a honeymoon in Turkey is May–June or September–October. The sea is warm, the cities are pleasant on foot, and Cappadocia's mornings are calmer.
  • For privacy, choose a villa with its own pool or a private boat. Book four to six months ahead for July and August, and allow spare mornings in Cappadocia in case a balloon flight is cancelled.

A honeymoon in Turkey can take in a great city, a landscape unlike anywhere else and a week by a warm sea, all in one journey of ten or twelve days. Domestic flights are short, and every stage can be private: a yacht on the Bosphorus at dusk, a balloon over Cappadocia at sunrise, a villa with its own pool above the Aegean.

We plan honeymoons across Türkiye, including for couples who have just married in Istanbul or at home. This guide compares the main honeymoon destinations, sets out three sample routes, and explains when to go.

Why choose Turkey for a honeymoon?

Türkiye offers a city, a landscape and the sea within short flights of each other. Istanbul to Cappadocia takes about an hour and twenty to thirty minutes by air, and Istanbul to Bodrum, Dalaman or Antalya roughly an hour to an hour and a half. That means a honeymoon with real variety, but without long days of travel. The food is generous, the hospitality is warm, and it suits couples from the Gulf, Europe and beyond equally well.

Honeymoon destinations in Turkey compared

Most couples combine two or three of these places. Each has a different mood.

Between Cappadocia and the coast, the usual connection is through Istanbul, or a private jet directly. See our flights and aviation service, and our ten-day Turkey itinerary for the timings in detail.

An Istanbul honeymoon itinerary

Three nights is the right length for an Istanbul honeymoon: enough for the old city, the Bosphorus and a slow day of your own.

  • Day one: arrive, rest, then a private yacht on the Bosphorus at sunset, with dinner on board as the lights come on along the shore. See our guide to Bosphorus yacht charters.
  • Day two: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace early in the morning with a private guide, before the crowds. A long lunch, then a hammam for two in the afternoon. Most historic hammams have separate sections for men and women, so for the two of you together we book a private hammam suite, usually in a hotel spa.
  • Day three: a slow morning, the Asian shore or a fitting at a tailor's, and dinner on a terrace with a view of the old city.

A Cappadocia honeymoon: the balloon at sunrise

A Cappadocia honeymoon centres on one morning: a hot air balloon rising over the valleys as the sun comes up. A private basket, for the two of you alone, is the way to do it. Balloons fly on roughly 200 to 220 mornings a year, when the civil aviation authority judges conditions safe, so plan two or three mornings to allow for a cancellation. Our guide to a private balloon flight in Cappadocia covers it in full.

Rock cones and cliffs carved with cave windows and dovecotes in a Cappadocia valley
Cappadocia's valleys are best on foot in the late afternoon, after a sunrise in the balloon.

Stay in a cave suite: rooms cut into the rock, many with a terrace over the valley and some with their own heated pool. Spend the afternoons walking the quieter valleys, and the evenings on the terrace watching the light change. See our Cappadocia journey.

A honeymoon in Turkey with a private pool

For most couples, the heart of the honeymoon is a week by the sea with a private pool and nobody else around. There are two main choices.

  • A honeymoon in Bodrum: villas on the hillsides above the bays, a short drive from the restaurants of Yalıkavak or the quiet of Gündoğan. Our guide to luxury villas in Bodrum compares the areas.
  • A honeymoon in Kaş or Kalkan: smaller towns on the Lycian coast, with villas above clear water and islands on the horizon. Quieter than Bodrum, and better for those who want the sea more than the social scene.

Days at sea: a gulet or a yacht for two

A day or a week on a private boat is the most private part of any honeymoon in Turkey. A gulet, the traditional wooden sailing boat, comes with a captain, crew and a cook, and anchors in a different bay each night. A motor yacht covers more distance in a day. From Kaş, a boat day over the sunken city at Kekova; from Bodrum or Göcek, a week of coves reached only from the water. See our yacht charters.

The best time for a honeymoon in Turkey

May, June, September and October are the best months for a route that combines Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast.

April – MayMild, spring flowers; good balloon conditionsWarm days, the sea still cool
JuneWarm and long eveningsWarm sea, not yet crowded
July – AugustHot in the city; early startsHot, lively, the warmest sea; peak demand
September – OctoberGolden light, comfortable daysThe sea still warm from summer; calmer and quieter

Practical notes for the two of you

Many couples arrive straight from a wedding. If you are marrying in Istanbul, we can plan the honeymoon as part of the same journey; read our guide to a wedding in Istanbul. Check visa rules for both passports early, as they can differ. Let us know about any surprises you want for each other, such as flowers in the villa, a dinner on the beach or a photographer for an hour at sunset, and we will keep them quiet.

For Gulf couples, privacy shapes every choice: villas with high walls and pools that cannot be seen, private boats rather than shared ones, and female staff where requested. Halal food is the norm across Türkiye.

Questions

What is the best place for a honeymoon in Turkey?

It depends on what the two of you love. Istanbul for history, food and evenings on the water; Cappadocia for the balloons and cave suites; Bodrum for villas, beach clubs and restaurants; Kaş and Kalkan for quiet bays and clear water. Most couples combine two or three.

How many days do we need for a honeymoon in Turkey?

Ten to twelve days lets you see Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast without rushing: about three nights in Istanbul, two or three in Cappadocia and five or more by the sea. With seven days, choose two places.

Can we have a honeymoon in Turkey with a private pool?

Yes. Villas with private pools are found on the Bodrum peninsula and above the bays of Kaş and Kalkan, and many hotels in Cappadocia and on the coast have suites with their own pool or terrace. Since 2024, a villa let to holiday guests needs a tourism rental permit, which we check before booking.

Is the hot air balloon flight in Cappadocia guaranteed?

No. Türkiye's civil aviation authority decides each morning whether conditions are safe, and balloons fly on roughly 200 to 220 mornings a year. Plan two or three mornings in Cappadocia so that a cancelled flight can be moved.

When is the best time for a honeymoon in Turkey?

May, June, September and October suit a route that includes Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast. July and August are best for a beach honeymoon, though hot and busy. Winter suits Istanbul and snowy Cappadocia, but not the sea.

Is Turkey a good honeymoon destination for Muslim couples?

Very much so. Halal food is the norm, mosques are everywhere, and prayer times are easy to keep. Villas with pools that cannot be overlooked, private boats and female staff can all be arranged.

Is Turkey a good honeymoon destination?

Yes. Turkey is a strong honeymoon destination because it fits a great city, an extraordinary landscape and a warm sea into one journey with short flights between them: Istanbul to Cappadocia takes about an hour and twenty to thirty minutes, and Istanbul to Bodrum or Antalya roughly an hour to an hour and a half. Every stage can be private, from a yacht on the Bosphorus to a balloon basket for two and a villa with its own pool, and the food and hospitality are generous throughout.

Is Istanbul good for a honeymoon?

Yes, Istanbul is one of the most romantic cities in which to start or end a honeymoon in Turkey, and three nights is the right length. Spend an evening on a private yacht on the Bosphorus, see Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace early with a private guide, and book a hammam for two: historic baths separate men and women, so couples use a private hammam suite. Our guide to the Turkish bath in Istanbul explains the ritual.

Can we have a winter honeymoon in Turkey?

Yes, though a winter honeymoon in Turkey is about cities and landscapes rather than the beach. From November to March, Istanbul is quiet, its monuments uncrowded and its hammams at their most welcome, while Cappadocia's valleys can be under snow, with cave suites, fireplaces and balloons on suitable mornings. The coast is too cool for most swimmers. Our guides to Istanbul in winter and where to stay in Cappadocia help you plan it.
